Parts of it were as expected and parts were, well somewhat odd.The good and as expected things. SO remembered it as expected and suggested we’d go out for dinner to a a posh restaurant. So we did and we had a great meal. Some readers with an interest in icecream may have to take extra notice.
We started with the cold and warm amuses (all one bite). Salmon, avocado on a potatochip, Mustard-marshmellow, Bean and bacon salad, Sole in remoulade, Lentil soup, Octopus in marinade.
At the table we were served with the special of 2010. Caviare, avocado and lobster gel. ( awesome)
First course SO has oyster with a beetroot and beetroot sorbet icecream. I started with the seabass with laird and spring onion in buttersause. Wonderfully rich and tender. Followed by langoustin, lobster gel in langoustin sauce. The SO then had Brill filled with goose liver and vegetables. I had the chicken with truffle. Next course we were on the same track again with venison dish with apple and potato. Then a strong kick with a cumin seed cheese with onion compote. Still very sweet but also a total weeeeeeeeeeeee feeling in your mouth.
Then the desert trio.
First the panecotta with lemongrass, grenadine and some tropical fruit that I can”t name any more. It sort of looked like a cross of kiwi and passionfruit. Then followed by Napoleon sweets icecream on grape gel and buttermilk curd with a tomato comfit. The ice cream was soooooooooo utterly exciting and wonderful. The third was the basil foam on a Basmati rice-ice cream with apple.
Through the whole meal SO was enjoying a great set of wines. We finished with coffee and sweets. A marshmello, a crunch a cookie and chocolate coated macedemia.
We’d been to the restaurant (Zwethheul) before but this was by far the best meal we’ve had there. The maitre told us that the cook had decided to change is style to lighter and to experiment a little more again. I’d say keep experimenting.
When we got home the freezer was doing beep beep beep beep. And was above temperature (-15). We thought we’d not closed the door properly so we closed it and went to bed. The next morning again it said beep beep beep, beep and had raised to -9. Try on/off trick. No luck and it is a Sunday. So we went into emergency mode. As the freezer is less than 2 years old it falls under warranty, but without a repair man and the service area not open until Monday we had a freezer full of problems. See remember the cow meat story? Well we still have quite a bit left of that. So off we went for the one store nearby-ish that is open on Sunday that sells table top freezer units (Mediamarkt). After spending a bit of money that we had not anticipated we parked it in our hallway. We then ended up moving everything out of our freezer and into the tabletop one. Most of it fit in there. Just left overs of food, and some bits had to be thrown out. And we took out enough meat to cook this week and make the damn stuff fit. So tonight we are eating bolognese as that did not fit the freezer.
Strangely enough it was not the wedding anniversary that I had anticipated, but on the upswing is that SO and I were showing again great teamspirit and working together.
