Sleeping in, that is what we are doing at present. Specifically this morning. SO made out of breakfast out of the left overs from yesterdays dinner. We had breakfast with poached eggs on avocade, rucola and salmon toast. No restaurant breakfast can beat that. In the afternoon we went on safari. A LOTR behind the scenes safari to be exact. Quite a few scenes form the movies were shot around Queenstown and there are a fair few tours still. Our safari combines the tour with a 4×4 drive with a little offoading.
Pick up was at 1.30 pm from the hotel and we picked up another 3 people on the way. It could have been a really cool and fun group of people. But the other three people were cold fish it seemed. Boring and very little comment. Alas we are different and made the best of it. We had a great afternoon.
We drove up to Glenorchy, from there it is gravel road (heard that one before) and the fun really starts. A few streams where the 4WD comes in really handy and driving a little fast through the forrest. Finally we arrived at what is also known as Isengard, or at least the natural part of it. It is very recognisable, provided it is pointed out to you. A lot of locations are on private land hence you only see in the distance. But ther ewhere you can go you will go. Thankfully the driver knows more than only the movie. There is a lot of background information on the area. Our driver used to own a sheepfarm and knows his area well. We gained a lot of knowledge on the history Queenstown but also the current situation. According to the driver/hunter the paradise ducks that are around are a very nice edible bird and it is not for nothing that he pointed them out a few times
The last LOTR site we went to is where the hobbits and Gollum look over the edge to the Elephants. That is just before they are caught by Faramir. This site is a bit further from the main road, so it turned to real off roading. It was great fun. We felt like a bunch of omelets once we arrived. Some plants were less impressed with us, the were flattened. .So there we were in the middle or nowhere with no baring to speak of. SO we followed the driver. it was a en minute walk up to a hill. This was not easy as the walk way was a gravel slide way. It was a case of slip sliding away, but so much fun.
Back in Queenstown we have had to buy SO new sunglasses. He sat on the previous ones and it bent. When SO bent it back it said ‘snap’ and he was holding two pieces. Then we had dinner and early to bed. Tomorrow we are going for our next trip starts at 8.30 am We are heading into Fiordland!
