Project management

Today I had day one of my project management course. It is something our whole department desperately wanted, but was hard to arrange. For me it was a case of I know quite a bit but never really had in depth training on theory etc. So it was not a complete revelation. In fact it showed me that a lot of things that I had been saying to my co-workers were right. But also that part of where I trip over is still relevant. Patience is still not my strong point 🙂

In the middle of the training I got a phonecall from my cleaning lady. Hearing noises int eh background I immediately though ambulance, but no it was our home alarm. My poor cleaning lady after weeks of not having to come in had been using the wrong button, so the alarm went off, and again, and again. Finally it was silenced. I called the despatch centre and called in my releasecode. Then I called SO to explain the issue. As soon as I hung up my cleaning lady was back on the phone. Again alarm noise in the background. By that stage she was panicking. Lucky for her my course was just down the road from home, so I told my boss, sorry she is too freaked to listen I have to get over there. One of my co-workers lent me her bike as it is was o close that I had walked there, but in case of a panic – still too far.

As soon as I got there I saw my cleaning lady, clearly not comfortable and a little embarrassed. I switched off the alarm and looked it over with her. Asked what she’s done and lo and behold the wrong button. Just as I’d suspected, but really try telling that to somebody with the alarm doing whee whee whee whee in your ear. She was ever so grateful and when calmed down she felt really silly. I calmed her by saying that both SO and I had done it a few times, so please be welcome to the club.

I then returned to my course. They’d had a break, knowing I’d never be long. Now it was my turn to feel embarrassed.
