SO and I have started a new course. Nothing to do with work for a change, but a fun one, a different one. We have started a course on how to start collecting art. A sort of art for dummies.
It is actually quite fun. for about 8 nights we are entertained and educated in various aspects of the artworld. So far we have had a speedclass how to look at art and what to look for. SO and I were in a group doing a write up of a painting. First word that comes to mind. All four: Blue. In fact for most of the exercise “I’m blue ladi-di-ladi-dah” was spinning in my head. But it was entertaining and informative.
Last night we went to three galleries. All very very different. The first one we really liked. The owner was trained as an artist himself and was a good conversationalist. Plus we liked the exhibition that he had on the walls. Not all of it but it was interesting, open and still friendly. A place that we will return to. The second place was a smaller gallery and not as much to our liking, the owners story was less ripping. Yet the most interesting part was that where the first one had said that to him the story behind the work, and the artists story was important to him to really get into the work, the second said exactly the opposite. To him the stories could in fact get in the way.
The third exhibition was from a pure art perspective the most interesting one. Conceptual art by Lars Laumann. An interesting Norwegian chap. His art at the gallery was amazing, overwhelming and in our view museum art. Not something you’d take home. But it was very very good and got us talking quite a bit. Certainly from the view of art this one was the most different for us, but also not easy to understand.
Next stop will be an art fair. We’ll see how that will go. So far the course has been fun, but will it bring us what we hope to find? Maybe, maybe not, Maybe it will bring totally different things.
