SO and I decided that we were going skietsen today. Our friends are not in town this weekend so it was just him and me. But as the temperature was expected to hit the tropical scorching level again I’d convinced SO to make an early start. Instead of our usual 14.00 we were on our merry way at 10.00.
As the prevailing wind was east we ended up taking a route which is slightly unusual for us, and is continuously changed as new housing estates are erected at alarming speeds. That means that new cycling paths appear out of nowhere and paths that are well known have disappeared and changed into houses. This makes for enjoyable and interesting journeys through well known town finding new ways to get around. And we found it is possible to get somewhat lost even with a GPS system on board.
This made that the start of our trip was a little slower due to the changed roads but it was good to do. As we progressed the temperature rose slowly. At around the 20km mark we had a stop. We both felt it was getting a bit hotter and decided to keep the stop short. The second part of our tour was easier and this time a path we’d expected to have been finished last year is now ready, making our home route massively better. SO loves tarmac under his skeelers and it showed. These are not roads for cars, but cycling/walking paths through the green areas between the towns around. With these new ones (taking into account the morning traffic jam) it is often faster to take a bike between towns than it is to take the car. Granted not weather proof.
We were home around 12.15 just as things really started heating up. We manged a lovely 35km in just over 2 hours. Both SO and I are pretty happy with the 35km and are now sitting out the hot afternoon inside, GPS analysing where we went wrong and what we should have done, internet surfing and reading (rereading Sundiver by David Brin). My skin clearly got out of the sun on time (sunscreen 30+) and I am OK with a glass of icewater next to me. Once the temperatures are bearable again then we’ll have a BBQ in the garden. So despite the not-so-me weather patterns this weekend it is actually a very nice weekend indeed.
