Summer seems to be over. Not that we had much, but still it is clear in the clothes and shoes I choose. It is also noticeable in the way I walk to work. That is carrying my rain gear in my backpack.

Today was one of those days that really showed autumn coming through. I heard it rain when I got up in the dark at 6.15. That is another one for the autumn – dark on getting up. So I took that into account when getting dressed. When I left the house it was dry though so I set off walking to work.

It was a nice crisp morning and I loved the feeling and smell of autumn taking over. Somehow autumn has a distinct smell that comes up as it progresses. I guess that it has to do with certain rotting processes starting. I did notice the thick back clouds heading into town and I suspected I may not get to work dry.

As usual I stopped thinking about anything about halfway to work. At that stage I just walk; I am just where I am and enjoy every moment. It is very much a here and now moment that I savour. At about 2/3 the black cloud reached me. It started dropping tiny drops, teasingly as if it was not sure it wanted to rain. But of course it did. Out came my new raincoat, the one that I bought to wear over my jackets.

Once it was on, I walked the last bit still in the here and now and actually enjoying the rain. There is something about walking in the rain. Seeing people trying to get out of the rain, battling through and thinking “guys this is actually nice”. Sure I wish I had screenwipers for my glasses, but really I really enjoy walking in the rain. Not always, but most times I do. Somehow most people don’t enjoy it and after a while you just feel as if you are the only one in the street. It feels lonely in that wonderful detached from the world way.

But all good things come to an end when I arrived at work. Bummer, back to reality.

  1. I couldn’t agree with you more about the rain – if you’re wrapped up for it walking in it can be nice. As we get plenty of it in Scotland, as you know, I figure we have a choice – embrace it or complain about it. I know what I would rather do.
