Today I did something I have wanted to do for a long time. I adopted a puppy. A live one a real one, but she will not be living with us. She is a pup that I sponsor at a distance. My pup lives with her puppy trainer and will if she passes her exams become a guide dog. She’s a six month old Labrador and cute as a button and a puppy version of my parents dog.
I would not mind having my own dog, but SO and I work long hours and it just would not be fair on the animal. She’d not get the attention she’d need and deserves. I did tell SO that I wanted a dog when we are retired, to ensure we go for long walks. Anyway I digress.
I have always felt that guide dogs are a great cause. They are working dogs that allow blind and other handicapped people to have a live as well as being a wonderful companion. It is a cause I have always supported. I knew that in the Netherlands and the UK it was possible to adopt a pup and had thought about it before. An article in the Guardian today about guide dogs at work brought it to me that this is such a fine cause and I surfed to the Dutch site, thinking I’ll do it tonight………. I signed up immediately when I saw my pup. Why? There she was; one adorable fluffy pup, her name just one letter different from my grandmothers, rather unusual, name. Not only was it gran’s name, but it would have been mine, if my gran had not put her foot down saying that it was way too old fashioned. It is weird how such a minor thing can all of a sudden clinch a deal that you have been thinking about for a while.
So I am a puppy mum now, without the mess and without the hassle. Still it feels good to do this. (PS, the pic is not my pup)
