As you can all imagine my country is in turmoil. A plane flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur was shot down.

By whom? No 100% certainties yet apart from the fact that it is a coward. Big enough to shoot with big weapons, too small to acknowledge he or she did it. Typical cowardly behaviour.

I did not loose a loved one. None of my extended network was directly affected. The only person I know anything of was Prof Joep Lange, and his passing will be sorely missed within HIV/AIDS research.

What upsets me is how these people in their death are becoming a political pawn between people that want to investigate what happened and move the victims in a dignified way to their families so that they can say goodbye. People there have been seen looting the place, stealing from the dead – so utterly low. It is so clear that the rebels ‘in control’ do not want any investigation. It is so clear that they want to hide stuff and it is so clear that there really is nobody in control at all.

Why can’t they for the purest dignity of the people that were killed step away for just two days, so that the victims can be repatriated in a dignified manner to their families. These people are not making any friends this way, they are just upsetting people a lot.

This is such a sad, shocking time for our little country. I am so sad, angry and generally upset and I am not even directly affected. My heart goes out to all those that lost their loved ones to due to this cowardly behaviour displayed by some self styled ‘rebels’. I wish there was more something I could do other than to voice it here.

About Gilraen

My blog is simply about my life. I moved countries for the first time in 1993. I lived in the Netherlands, UK and NZ. The initial idea was to keep my overseas friends up-to-date with what was going on in my life. The blog, like me, is always changing and evolving.

Unbearably sad. Whatever they are fighting for, it is not worth this loss of life. To loot from the innocent just adds credence to the fact that these people are barbarians.

I feel the same way. And these people won’t even let the investigators in properly.

Thanks to pointing me to the fact that Prof. Lange was a victim. That has not been in the news coverage here. ITV news did say that the town of Hilversum is mourning a number of dead. Also double tragic for Malaysia, only a few months after the loss of MH370.
I think that in this day and age, with guerilla fighters and terrorist groups increasingly obtaining and using RPGs and SAMs, international aviation authorities and companies should take steps to not have commercial planes flying over war zones.

It is horrible, and I have been thinking of you and your wonderful country. I’m so sorry!
