First steps

Fort William is just the starting point of our little adventure this year Scotland put up one of its less wonderful days today but we managed to get were we wanted to go.

We took our fist steps on that long trail called the great glen way . 117 km of walking ahead of us over 7 days. Sure it is possible to do it in less or on a bike or horse for that matter, but as beginners in long distance walking we decided to do this well known beginners trail in 7 days and in style.

So we hired a bunch of people who organize these things well and with good reviews and they elected to agree with our order organized our hotels and are taking our luggage to the next hotel every day. This of course means that these tow luxury people (me and SO) only need to put one foot in front of the other about 27,000 times – according to my pacer app- and we arrive at the next hotel.

As said the weather was not the best but we came prepared and had our rain gear on Of course on a lovely full length trail like this there is always one that starts the same trail roundabout exactly the time you do. We ended up waving to each other a few times when we overtook on resting places. We also came across a bunch of runners. We suspect they only ran part of the great glen past the Caledonian canal but it was fun to see. We suspect we only saw the last ones as they looked more tired and less trained as time went on.

Over the course of the day it did stop raining a few times and we even got to see the sun for a bit After the sunshine there was a return to drizzle with a.closure of our walking day with a drenching. After 18+km and 4,5 hours we arrived at our B&B. After a nice hot shower we took a taxi to Spean Bridge for some lounging around in the Old Station restaurant and had dinner there too. Around nine the taxi picked up up again and now we are going to sleep to be well rested for our next leg of our journey. so. Expect a lot of talk about walking and weather over the next few days 🙂

I hope the weather improves during your big walk. It’s a bit changeable here. I looked up the Great Glen Way on the map – I’ve only driven along that route but the scenery is amazing.
